Foundation engineering is the
specific branch of engineering that deals with the design and construction of
building foundations, as well as foundations for other structures. It requires
knowledge of geology, structural engineering and the mechanics of soil and
rock.

the types of foundations and retaining structures.

the types of loads to be applied to foundations and retaining structures.

suitability, feasibility, and desirability of each type of foundations and
retaining structure.

the aims of using the foundations and retaining structure.
- Select
the proper type of foundation and retaining structure according to the
site and structure characteristics.
- Evaluate
the settlement of the selected foundations.
- Understand
and apply specification requirements.
The function of foundation
engineering is to provide a foundation that is capable of supporting a
pre-designed superstructure without overloading the soil and causing a
structural failure. Foundation engineers are responsible for determining the
type of foundation, are it shallow or deep, best suited to each construction
site.
IMPORTANCE:-
Foundation Engineering is the engineering field of study devoted to the design of
those structures which support other structures, most typically buildings,
bridges or transportation infrastructure. It is at the periphery of Civil, Structural and Geotechnical Engineering
disciplines and has distinct focus on soil-structure interaction.
That branch of engineering concerned
with evaluating the earth's ability to support a load and designing
substructures to transmit the load of superstructures to the earth.
Another important aspect of foundation
engineering involves the development of design parameters, such as the bearing
capacity of the foundation.
